About Us

Community Birth & Family Center was conceived by a committed group of people who envisioned a full-facility birth center that provides a safe, home-like alternative to hospital birthing. In June 1996, Community Birth & Family Center was incorporated as a freestanding nonprofit 501(c)(3) childbirth center serving a diverse group of women and families. Esteemed members of the childbirth community, including Dr. Margaret Bone, author and educator Penny Simkin, PT and Kristin Leander, PhD, established a Board of Directors to oversee the Center and turned their dream into a reality. Today, the Center remains the only community-based nonprofit childbirth center in Seattle. The Center has attracted a diversity of families over the years, many of whom have returned for their second birth.
Several other services are housed in the same buidling as the Center, including a family medical practice, birth counseling, psychotherapy, and workshops on parenting and pregnancy.
